CBA - Avanade Women In Information Technology Scholarship

The Avanade Women in Information Technology Scholarship (“Avanade Scholars”) through the Mitchell C. Hill Center for Applied Business Technology at Cal Poly Pomona is a merit and need-based scholarship program for talented undergraduates majoring in computer information systems or computer science at Cal Poly Pomona. Scholarships will be awarded, provided a sufficient number of eligible students are identified through the application process. A female student meeting the criteria and otherwise equal to others in qualifications will receive more favorable consideration.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to apply in addition to currently enrolled sophomores and juniors in good standing. This scholarship is renewable on an annual basis for up to five (5) academic years based on the maintenance of eligibility. Avanade Scholars can receive up to five (5) years of an annual scholarship which varies per academic year to cover undergraduate tuition, mandatory fees, and other related expenses. Each Avanade Scholar participates in special activities and receives mentoring from participating members of the Information Technology community.

In addition to completing their chosen major, Avanade Scholars have the opportunity to participate in a series of academic and extracurricular activities designed to foster a supportive community for women in technology. Such activities include:
-A mentoring program connecting Avanade Scholars to successful IT professionals
-Networking opportunities with successful IT professionals
-An outreach program for Avanade Scholars to mentor middle and high school girls to encourage them to consider a career in IT
-An internship program in partnership with Avanade that will involve premier workforce development opportunities for Avanade Scholars in their junior and/or senior years
-Leadership opportunities through participation in on-campus organizations
-Various community-building social activities with peers

Candidates for the Avanade Scholars program must complete a Cal Poly Pomona scholarship application through the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. A personal essay outlining desire to pursue a career in IT and financial need in addition to two letters of recommendation are required: one from a science or technology instructor and one from someone familiar with the student’s academic work and leadership qualities. Additional criteria are listed below. A faculty scholarship committee will select and interview finalists and award the scholarships. Applicants to the Avanade Scholars program must have applied for admission to Cal Poly Pomona and have been accepted prior to the date the committee reviews scholarship applications. For full consideration, it is recommended that students who plan to apply for the Avanade Scholars program apply to Cal Poly Pomona by November 30 of their senior year in high school.

• Incoming freshman or transfer student, and current sophomores or juniors in good standing
• Declared concentration in computer information systems or computer science
• Ability to show financial need, and completion of Cal Poly scholarship application
• Personal essay and two (2) letters of recommendation
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA each semester
• Minimum of twelve (12) units each semester
