CLASS - Com - Frank A. Tennant Endowed Scholarship

A four-year $25,000 ($6,250 per year) scholarship will be awarded to one or more students. The scholarship will be disbursed to recipients in two installments of $3,125 per academic year. Scholarship recipients must meet with his/her academic adviser each semester, and maintain membership in at least one the following professional organizations: the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ); The Poly Post (newspaper); or the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

Criteria:
• Must be an Incoming first-year student OR currently first-year students who want to pursue a career in journalism or public relations
• Minimum GPA of 3.5 (will consider high school GPA for incoming students and cumulative GPA for all current first-year students)
• High school journalism and/or publications experience will be considered
• Demonstration of academic merit and financial need
• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency not required

Note: Finalists may be interviewed by the Communication Department’s Student Scholarship Committee.

  1. Upload a statement of purpose (500 word maximum) on why you want to be a journalist or public relations practitioner.
  2. Submit 2-3 writing samples, preferably samples of work published in high school or college media (such as newspaper, website, newsletter etc.)
  3. Please request TWO letters of recommendation SPECIFICALLY for this scholarship. The two letters you requested as part of your General Application will not count. You may ask teachers, mentors, or counselors to address your potential for success as a college student and as a journalist or public relations practitioner. They can address their letter as follows: Dear Frank Tennant Scholarship Committee.
