College of Science - Geology - Ernest Prete, Jr. Geological Sciences Scholarship

The ERNEST PRETE, JR. GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP AT CAL POLY POMONA Consists of two parts: a $1,000 sum awarded annually to a continuing student; and 2) placement of the recipient’s name on a plaque displayed in the Geological Sciences Department Office. The overriding intention is to recognize individuals with outstanding commitments to the field of Earth Sciences with an emphasis in environmental studies. When funds from earnings on the endowment permit, more than one scholarship may be awarded each year.

This scholarship will be awarded to a student(s) who demonstrates academic excellence and a commitment to the study and understanding of Earth’s physical. Its purpose is three-fold:

  1. To recognize the importance of protecting our environment through a thorough understanding of Earth’s natural physical processes and their complex of environmental inter-relationships.
  2. To recognize the value of “hands-on” learning opportunities through the senior research thesis, and;
  3. To recognize academic excellence.

Criteria:

• To qualify for the Scholarship the student must be classified as a senior during Fall semester 2024. Open to continuing Seniors who have completed a minimum of 90 Semester units, or its equivalent, of university credits.
• Open to continuing Juniors who plan to have completed a minimum of 90 Semester units, or its equivalent, of university credits at the conclusion of this spring semester.
• Must be enrolled in the Cal Poly Pomona Geology BS degree program and have sufficient course-related obligations to be in residence during Fall Semester 2024.
• Student must have a 2.7 GPA or above
• Only students in good academic standing with the University will be considered in the pool of eligible persons.

• Must complete the following supplemental requirements:

  1. a proposal outlining the purpose or goals of the study and how it will improve, forward, or better our understanding of the physical environment
  2. a timeline for thesis work and a budget;or, if thesis is already underway, a description of thesis progress and costs incurred or expected;
  3. a brief description of personal ideals and career goals; and
  4. a copy of college transcripts (official transcripts not required).

Awards each year are based on the student’s general application and supplemental responses._
