ENV - Landscape Architecture - Ruth Shellhorn Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to fund one or more students who have shown dedication to landscape architecture and an appreciation for plant material as an integral part of design. Preference will be given to students in need of financial assistance in order to finish their education. The amounts of the scholarship shall be determined by the faculty and in consideration of the greatest need, to a maximum of $5,000 annually. The scholarship is established in memory of Ruth Shellhorn, the first professionally-trained woman landscape architect of the Southern California Chapter of the ASLA and one of the first female Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Award Period: Fall 2024

Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled full-time (12 units for undergraduate students and 6 units for graduate students)
  • Open to undergraduate (BSLA) or graduate (MLA) students
  • Must have a major GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA)
  • Complete general scholarship application.
  • Must complete supplemental criteria
    - Letter of intent specifically describing dedication to leadership within the discipline of Landscape Architecture and personal philosophy towards plant materials and design. (Generic statements will be scored lower than well-written statements addressing the intentions of the scholarship)
    - Current resume.
    - A4 size digital portfolio:
    – Maximum of 8-page spreads of A4 size (16 pages total).
    – Portfolio projects that support application.

Note:
- If selected for scholarship, recipients must provide a hard copy of portfolio, and all required documents including thank you letter, submitted to the Department Landscape Architecture office by June 1, 2024. A presentation must be made within one year of receiving the scholarship.
- Funds contingent on availability.
